Silicon Valley lore is filled with stories of great ideas that are incubated as garage startups; grown into successful businesses; and come-of-age as empires and entirely new industries. Virtual PBX began its tale just a little futher north in the heart of San Francisco, in the musky basement of an old Victorian. In August of 1995, practically prehistoric times by tech standards, the first seeds of an entirely new business sector set root. Inspired by the need to ... CTO and Founder, Stephen W. Lange began writing.
Development began in March of 1996 and by June the company had been incorportated as Advanced Queueing Systmes. By August of 1997, the first fully functional hosted PBX system was born, incorporating many of the fundamental features that exist to this day. Out-of-the-box, from the first launch date our systems incorporated features that are now considered standard for the entire industry:
- Customized auto-attendant (virtual receptionist) messages
- TrueACD™ queues that allowing customers to get to entire departments of agens
- Call forwarding and follow-me calling
- The ability to receive faxes
- Voicemail and remote messaging services to all extension owners
- Blind transfer of calls
- Call preview detail
- Over-the-phone extension creation
- Customizable music-on-hold with a built-in library
- Customizable information-on-hold
- Configurable phone number ring-to locations
- Built-in N-1 redundancy
During its twelve year existence one of the key factors in the company's continued growth is the ability to drive down costs while investing in infrastructure and networking. During that period costs have been reduced by a factor of 10.
2004 Milestones
- Major product enhancements include skills-based routing capabilities, integrated conferencing, real-time online monitoring of ACD queues and human resources, and real-time logs and call reporting.

2003 Milestones
- Virtual PBX introduces a secured web portal giving allowing clients to listen to voice mail, read faxes, and forward voice and fax messages to e-mail.
- Virtual PBX opens its first high-security datacenter.
2002 Milestones
- Virtual PBX names its first CEO, Paul Hammond.
